Although it is not known exactly what causes one to be on the autism spectrum or what causes one's sexual orientation, a few limited studies into autistic people have shown higher rates of LGBTQA identity and feelings among autistic people than the general population.

Early misconceptions

Early understandings of the sexuality of autistic people – such as claims that autistic people lack any kind of a sex drive or desire for sexuality – have been seen as mostly negative and inaccurate in the 21st century.[1]

Autism and sexual orientation

Although studies into the link between sexual orientation and those on the autism spectrum are rare, it has been noted that many autistic people are less likely to identify as heterosexual than their non-autistic counterparts.

Studies on sexual orientation and autism suggest that more autistic people have homosexual and bisexual feelings compared to the general population[1][2][3] with some studies showing higher rates of asexuality among autistic people.[2][4][5]

Autism and gender dysphoria

Gender dysphoria is a diagnosis given to people (eg transgender) who experience discomfort related to their gender identity.[6] Autistic people are more likely to experience gender dysphoria.[7][8][9] Around 20% of gender identity clinic-assessed individuals reported characteristics of ASD.[10]
