On June 23, 1074, a Zirid fleet under the command of Tamim ibn al-Muizz ibn Badis sailed to Nicotera and seized control of the city. They not only captured Nicotera but also completely destroyed it, demolishing Norman fortifications and capturing its citizens. The captured citizens were either sold into slavery or held for ransom Roger's neglect of many of his territories, particularly those around Calabria, left them vulnerable to increased Muslim raids. |
