Duncan Bell received a degree in war studies at King's College London. Upon graduating, Bell considered joining the military; but the transition to London from a quieter area, and the experiences he had there, changed his plans. Bell’s first degree was a BA in War Studies from King’s College London (1995-1998). He was awarded an M.Phil in International Relations (1999) and a PhD in History (2004) from the University of Cambridge, where he was a student at Jesus College. During the academic year 2000-2001, he was a Fulbright Scholar in the Department of Political Science at Columbia University.

After a Junior Research Fellowship at Christ’s College, Cambridge (2004-2008), and a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship (2008-2010), Bell was appointed to a Lectureship in the Department of Politics and International Studies (POLIS) at Cambridge. He was promoted to a professorship in 2019. He has held visiting positions at Harvard, Darmstadt and the FU Berlin. He is the Co-Director of the Cambridge Centre for Political Thought.

== Work ==
Bell has worked mainly on the history of British ideas about empire and international politics since the mid-nineteenth century. He has written three books on the subject, all published by Princeton University Press: The Idea of Greater Britain: Empire and the Future of World Order, 1860-1900 (2007); Reordering the World: Essays on Liberalism and Empire (2016); and Dreamworlds of Race: Empire and the Utopian Destiny of Anglo-America (2020). He has also written on various other subjects, including ideas about collective memory, the history and theory of liberalism, political realism, and utopianism. Bell’s most recent work has explored the impact of science and technology on British and American political thought during the twentieth century.

Bell has won a number of awards for his work, including the Whitfield Prize of the Royal Historical Society (2007), the Philip Leverhulme Prize for Modern History (2012), and the Transatlantic Studies Association/CUP Book Prize (2021).

Duncan Bell, FBA (born 31st of December 1976), is a British academic. He is a Professor of Political Thought and International Relations at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Christ’s College, Cambridge.

He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 2021.

Education and Career

Bell’s first degree was a BA in War Studies from King’s College London (1995-1998). He was awarded an M.Phil in International Relations (1999) and a PhD in History (2004) from the University of Cambridge, where he was a student at Jesus College. During the academic year 2000-2001, he was a Fulbright Scholar in the Department of Political Science at Columbia University.
