Klebsiella variicola was originally identified as a non-pathogenic endophyte in plants[1]. K. variicola is known to associate with a number of different plants including banana trees[1], sugarcane[2] and has been isolated from the fungal gardens of leaf-cutter ants[3]. Additionally, K. variicola strains Bz19[4] and 8917[5] have been isolated from humans and found to be directly involved in pathogenicity. Furthermore, this microorganism has been found to cause bovine mastitis[6][7].
