The Mohamed Bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund is an endowment that promotes conservation headed by Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the crown prince of Abu Dhabi.[1] The fund was established in October 2008 and became active in January 2009.[2] It had an initial endowment of €25 million. Funds are directed to projects to conserve threatened and endangered species of animals, plants and fungi around the world.[3] It gave more than $2.4m in 2010 to 214 projects in almost 80 countries.[2]

History

A species of woodlizard Enyalioides binzayedi was discovered through the support of the fund to the expeditions leading to the discovery of the specie in the Cordillera Azul National Park in Peru.[4]

In 2017, a rare and majestic specie of maple tree was discovered and named Acer binzayedii through the support of the fund and found in the mountainous cloud forest of Jalisco in Western México.[5]
