Ari Kagan is an American politician serving as a member of the New York City Council from the 47th district. Elected in November 2021, he assumed office on January 1, 2022.

Early life and education

Kagan was born in Minsk, Belarus, and immigrated to New York City with his family in 1993. His parents were survivors of the Holocaust. He graduated from the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College.[1]

Career

Kagan worked as an assistant to Comptroller John Liu and Congressman Michael McMahon.[2] For 21 years, Kagan hosted a civics-themed television and radio show. He also wrote for Russian language newspapers. Kagan continues to host programs on the Russian Television Network of America.[3] In 2012, he was elected district leader of New York's 45th State Assembly district.[4] In November 2021, he was elected to the New York City Council, succeeding Mark Treyger.[5][6]
