Distinguish from "broomstick".

Boomstick is a slang term for a gun, usually a 12 gauge, double barrel, sawn-off shotgun. A stereotypical hick might use this word.

The term "boomstick" was used by Bruce Campbell's character, Ash Williams, in the movie Army of Darkness. He used this word to describe his gun to a group of villagers after he was sent back in time. The word has also become somewhat of a staple in the lexicon of fans, and has also made its way into a video game based on the film: Evil Dead: A Fistful of Boomstick. The reference to Army of Darkness is probably why the term is used in the Quake series of games and other first-person shooter games to describe a shotgun.

[edit] Popular culture

  • In Warcraft 3, if the player repeatedly clicks on a dwarven rifleman, he will say, among other things, "This is my BOOMSTICK!"
  • In World Of Warcraft, in the Dwarven starting region of Dun Morogh, there is a group of dwarves along the road from Coldridge Valley to Kharanos. Every 10 minutes or so, they will commence an event where they will walk up the hill and start target practice, and one of the dwarves will yell out, "This is my BOOMSTICK!" (a re-use of the sound effect from Warcraft III).
  • In the Coheed and Cambria song, Junesong Provision from the Album Delirium Trigger, a sound clip of the "This is my boomstick" line can be heard at the beginning of the song.
  • The hardcore DJ Scott Brown has a track titled "Boomstick" which features quotes from the movie.
  • In Quake, the standard shotgun is called "boomstick" while playing in deathmatch mode.
