A caravan city is a city located on and deriving its prosperity from its location on a major trans-desert trade route.[1]

Caravan cities include Dura-Europos, Palmyra[2] and Damascus in Syria, Oulata in Mauritania, Petra in Jordan and Samarkand in Uzbekistan.
