Carenet Healthcare Services is an American provider of healthcare support services, care management programs and consumer engagement solutions to private and public institutions including healthcare companies, hospital systems, employer groups, the US Military and government-sponsored programs such as Medicare and Medicaid.

Carenet’s team of registered nurses and healthcare professionals serves over 20 million healthcare consumers in the United States, Europe, Asia and Africa via multiple communication channels with 24/7 services such as care navigation, nurse advice, virtual doctor consults, patient advocacy, decision support, hospital post-discharge management and pharmaceutical support.

Carenet began in 1988 as a patient-management operation within the Christus Santa Rosa Health System in San Antonio, Texas. In 2004, an investor group purchased Carenet from Christus and transitioned the company into a nationwide business processing outsourcer offering medical call center and customer contact services exclusively to healthcare companies such as health plans, hospital systems, employer groups, pharmacy and radiology benefit managers, the US Military and government-sponsored programs such as Medicare and Medicaid.

Carenet’s initial product offering was a patient navigation and advocacy platform including a telephonic nurse advice service. Its portfolio of healthcare support services, care management programs and consumer engagement solutions rapidly grew as did the company’s revenue earning it the title of an Inc. 500 Fastest Growing Company in America in 2009 and 2010[1][2] and an Inc. 5000 Fastest Growing Company in America in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.[3][4][5][6]

In 2011, Carenet expanded internationally serving members in Europe, Asia and Africa.

Carenet is headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, with regional offices in Tennessee, Nebraska and Iowa. The company’s workforce consists of hundreds of employees located across the United States.

Carenet provides healthcare support services, care management programs and consumer engagement solutions such as patient advocacy, care navigation, nurse advice, virtual doctor consults, medical decision support, hospital post-discharge management, emergency room diversion, disease/condition management and pharmaceutical support.

Carenet’s team of registered nurses and healthcare support professionals assist more than 20 million consumers in the United States, Europe, Asia and Africa including health plan members, medical patients, employees and military beneficiaries. Carenet’s services are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year via multiple communication channels including the web, email, chat, SMS, video and telephone.

Accreditations and Certifications[edit]

  • URAC Health Call Center Standards Accreditation: URAC Health Call Center standards apply to organizations providing triage and health information services to the public when conducted by telephone, via the web or other electronic means. The standards assure that registered nurses, physicians or other validly licensed individuals perform the clinical aspects of triage and other health information services in a manner that is timely, confidential, and includes medically appropriate care and treatment advice.[7][8]
  • National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) Health Information Product (HIP) Certification: Awarded to Carenet for its proficiency in implementing and managing a diverse set of solutions recognized by NCQA HIP, including Health Appraisals, Pharmacy Benefits, Health Information Lines, and Wellness and Prevention solutions.[9]
  • SAS 70: Completion of the SAS 70 Type I audit indicates the successful examination of Carenet’s processes, controls and procedures, pertaining to information technology general controls for the healthcare support system. A service auditor's examination at a point in time (Type I) performed in accordance with SAS No. 70 (SAS 70 Audit) is widely recognized as it represents that a service organization has been through an in-depth audit of the design and implementation of their control objectives and control activities, which included controls over information technology and related customer facing processes.
