Civil engineers from Switzerland exerted considerable influence on modern structural design. David P. Billington, a civil engineering professor and historian of the field at Princeton University, attributes the output of the Swiss in the 19th and 20th century to the refining effect of the competitions used to select Swiss public-works designs, among other causes.
