For Symphonies by Michael Haydn, there are four different catalogs to consider. Perger's catalog of Haydn's instrumental music uses numbers from 1 to 52. Sherman's catalog of 1982 lists 41 authentic symphonies plus four that were mistakenly attributed to Haydn. The Sherman & Donley catalog of 1993 makes no reference to Sherman's earlier numbering and includes a few symphonies possibly predating the one labelled No. 1 by Sherman.

However, Sherman's 1982 numbering, with adjustments, has been more accepted by the recording labels. These adjustments are, namely:

a) New evidence suggests slightly different conjectural dating, affecting the following symphonies in the following sets: {4–10}, {16–17} and {22–23}

b) The discovery of four symphonies believed to have been written in 1758, perhaps after the work identified as Symphony No. 1 by Sherman in 1982, but certainly before the 1761 Symphony in C major, which is identified as No. 2 in both Perger's 1907 catalog and Sherman's 1982 catalog. These four symphonies are therefore referred to with the number 1 followed by the letter A, B, C or D.
