The castle was built in the 13th century by the Hanau-Lichtenberg family, and was in the center of a constantly shifting territory, which traded hands many times until the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, when it was partly destroyed by artillery fire and the resulting fires.
It was left to deteriorate for 120 years. Then, a massive consolidation project was undertaken on the ruins, with an investment of 52 million francs.
