Chloropicus is a genus of woodpeckers in the family Picidae that are native to Africa. Species in this genus were previously assigned to Dendrocopos.[1][2]
The name of the genus was introduced by the French ornithologist Alfred Malherbe in 1845.[3] The word Chloropicus is from the Greek khlōros meaning green and pikos meaning woodpecker.[4]
The genus contains the three species:[2]
- Bearded woodpecker, Chloropicus namaquus
- Yellow-crested woodpecker, Chloropicus xantholophus
- Fire-bellied woodpecker, Chloropicus pyrrhogaster
