Collectors Universe Inc. (NASDAQ:CLCT) was set up in 1986 and now is based in Santa Ana, California. The company provides third-party authentication and grading services to collectors, retail buyers and sellers of rare and high-value collectibles. Its authentication service includes collections like coins, trading cards, sports memorabilia, and autographs. There are mainly three divisions operating in the company, namely Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA), and PSA/DNA Authentication Services (for vintage autographs and memorabilia). In addition the company engages in business-to-business (B2B) market for certified coins under Certified Coin Exchange (CCE), and a business-to-consumer (B2C) under Collectors Corner. The company is expected to reach the combined total of 50 million certified collectibles in early 2014. Collectors Universe is also a famous publisher in related fields.[1]

Operations

Sept 2011, Collectors Universe acquired Coinflation.com with about $750,000.[2]
February 2009, Collectors Universe sold its currency authentication and grading division to a new company formed for the acquisition and managed by Jason W. Bradford.[3]

In 2000, the Company acquired Jimmy Spence's sports autograph authentication company and later acquired privately held Odyssey Publications Inc.[4]

Products & Services

PCGS Coin Authentication and Grading Services focuses on coins market and have authenticated and graded over 27 million coins with an estimated market value of $27 billion. Oct 2012, Collectors Universe’s division PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) authenticated the 25 millionth coin (PCGS Secure Plus MS65) from Japan, being a historical milestone of the company performance.[5] March 2010, PCGS introduced the PCGS Secure Plus service to improve the confidence of the grading process.[6]
Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) focuses on sports and trading cards market. PSA/DNA Autograph Authentication and Grading Services focuses on autograph autographs and memorabilia market. In the publishing field, the company publishing Sports Market Report monthly, covering collectibles data and seller’s advertising.[7]

Nov 2013, Collectors Universe was ranked No.50 America's Best Small Public Companies by Forbes magazine.[8]
