Culture and Society 1780-1950 (ISBN 0-231-05701-6) is a book on culture by Raymond Williams, first published in 1958.
Raymond Williams' most influential book, it is perhaps most famous for coining the phrase 'cultural studies'. Influenced by both Karl Marx and F. R. Leavis, Williams applies the apparatus of literary criticism to examine the formation of culture itself, looking at the ways in which culture both reflects the socio-economic conditions of the day, as well as creating a prism in which we understand society itself.
