Dattadevi was the wife and chief consort[2] of the Gupta emperor Samudragupta.[3][4] She was the mother of Samudragupta's successor, Chandragupta II,[5] She was most probably married to Samudragupta during his educational career.[2] Harisena, Samudragupta's court poet and close friend, played an important role[clarification needed] in the marriage of Samudragupta to Dattadevi.[6] She is described as a "virtous and faithful wife" in an Eran inscription.[1]
