Destiny Radio, broadcasting under the name Destiny 105, is a local community radio station for the east of Oxford, England, and the surrounding area. The station is licensed by Ofcom and broadcasts on 105.1 FM in Oxford and also online.

History

The station originally broadcast as Radio OX4 for three months a year with a special events licence covering the school holidays and the Cowley Road Carnival. When they originally planned to go full time it was at first intended to retain the name before subsequently deciding to go with the frequency. Setting up the station after the granting of the licence took so long the licence almost expired.

The station was originally licensed as OX105 and first launched on the 27 February 2012.[1]

In 2013 OX105 ceased broadcasting [2] and was subsequently found in breach by Ofcom [3] for failing to provide the licensed service.

After a complete change of management[4] the station was re-launched as Destiny 105 in 2014 from new studios in East Oxford. The station's license is currently held by OX4 FM CIC a not-for-profit company and new studio facilities were provided by Broadcast Ltd.[5]

Format

During the day, Destiny Radio plays a mainstream selection of music dating from around the 1970s to date interspersed with news and information for the local community. During evenings, specialist shows cover a wide range of information and music of all types.[6]

Technology

Destiny Radio is notable in that the studios run almost entirely using Open Source software, with Linux used extensively throughout the station.[7]

Funding

In line with Ofcom rules,[8] UK community radio stations are only allowed to raise a maximum of 50% of their income from advertising sales. The majority of funding for the station is therefore currently provided by donations from presenters and the public.
