East Sydney is a locality within the suburbs of Darlinghurst and Woolloomooloo in the City of Sydney. With the exception of William Street, the suburb remains primarily a residential area, and council proposals for street closures in 2005 indicate that it will probably stay that way. Stanley Street and Crown Street feature many restaurants with different cuisines. Italian is the most popular type championed by Bill & Toni's on Stanley St, as East Sydney was Sydney's primary Italian community in the 1960s and 1970s and the area is still sometimes called Little Italy due to a predominantly Italian descent in the area.
East Sydney - as part of the Eastern Suburbs - is represented in one of the most popular sporting competitions in Australia, the National Rugby League, by the local Rugby League club, the Sydney Roosters (formerly known as the Eastern Suburbs Roosters) which have represented the area in the League since 1908.
