| Description |
English: 26 Exeter Street also known as 181 Newbury Street, in the Back Bay neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, was built from 1883 to 1885 by the Norcross Brothers, and was designed by Hartwell and Richardson to be the First Spiritual Temple of the Working Union of Progressive Spiritualists. In 1914, the League vacated part of the building to become the Exeter Street Theatre, with remodeling done by Clarence Blackall, The theatre closed in October 1973, but reopened under new ownership and continued to operate until 1984, after which the theatre space was elimiated by converting it into restaurant space The building had been purchased from the Spiritualists in 1974, and a "greenhouse" addition was constructed on the Newbury Street side. In 2005, Kingsley Montessori School leased the first three floors of 26 Exeter for its elementary school. (Source: Back Bay Houses) |
