Summary

Description
English: 80-G-42356: Poon Lim, a 25-year-old Chinese mess steward, shows Rear Admiral Julius Furer how he took the spring out of an electric light and made a fish hook while he was adrift in the South Atlantic for 133 days. When his ship was torpedoed off the coast of West Africa, November 23, 1942, he swam to a life raft and found enough food on it to last him for 55 days. After that, he lived on fish and birds. He was rescued April 4, 1943 off the coast of Brazil. Photographed: July 21, 1943. Official U.S. Navy photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives. (2016/05/17).
