DescriptionA structural model for 'periplasmic organelle' (PO) of gram negative microorganisms..jpg
English: PO is an inflated pocket of periplasm due to stimulated protein secretion via 'general secretory pathway (GSP)' of secretory proteins (sp) and chaperons (ch). PO is externally bounded by lipopolysaccharde (LPS)-rich and porin/outer membrane proteins(pr) bacterial outer membrane (OM) and internally by peptidoglycan (PDG) layer and bacterial inner membrane (IM). OM and IM are riveted at the base of PO by type 3 secretory-like rivet complexes (rc) consisting of two set of membrane-held rings (R,r)connected by cylinder (c) and extendable needle (N).
