Notes | banner - Court Pride of Onehunga, No 5261, Ancient Order of Foresters; We Assist the Widow and Orphans The Ancient Order of Foresters with its motto Unity, Benevolence and Concord, began in England in the mid-eighteenth century. By the time the first New Zealand branch opened in 1852 it was an established friendly society, providing sickness and death benefits to its members and having a particular concern for widows and orphans. From 1909 their activities were governed by the Friendly Societies Act, which required the compulsory registration of all such societies. The first Auckland Court opened in 1863, and membership reached a peak in the mid 1930s. Since then membership has declined as many of the benevolent functions were taken over by the state. This banner was part of the regalia of Court 5261, “Court Pride of Onehunga”, established in 1875. On the reverse side, the motto “We Help Widows and Orphans” appears above a painting showing a widow and her children grieving at a grave-side. It was made in London by the firm Geo. Tutill and Sons, George Tutill, well known as a maker of banners and regalia for both Trade Unions and Friendly Societies, and the painted illustrations are by I. Robb. Tutill banners were of pure silk and he had patented a method for treating the silk fabric with an India rubber solution to provide a durable yet flexible surface for applying paint. For the more expensive banners, like this one, the decorative surround was woven into the fabric using a jacquard loom. Banners were supplied complete with twelve feet carrying poles, and were sent to the purchaser (with free fire insurance for one year) wrapped in a waterproof cover and contained in a 4.27 metres long wooden box. George Tutill visited New Zealand and Australia in 1881, undoubtedly securing some orders for banners, and we believe this banner may date to that period. Court "Pride of Onehunga" was a very active branch which established its own hall in Grey Street, Onehunga. This hall is still standing (2006) but has been converted into a residential dwelling. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
