Description
English: Painted Basin
  • Yangshao Culture, Banpo style (4800-4300 B.C.)
  • Neolithic Period (ca. 5000 - 3000 B.C.)
  • Excavated at Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, 1955
This basin covered a "coffin urn", used in the burial of a child; it is painted with a human face whose nose is shaped like an upside down "T", and there is a fish near each ear. A Shaman likely used the face and fish designs to communicate with the netherworld, and to protect the soul of the dead child.
