Christchurch was chosen to be an 'anti-tank island' during the second world war and was heavily defended with pillboxes, tank traps and gun emplacements. The idea was that if the German VI army invaded from Cherbourg they would be divided and unable to link up east to west for as long as the town of Christchurch held out. This part is a scheduled ancient monument.
