Description
English: Historical coat of arms of Csanád county
Magyar: Csanád vármegye címere
A pajzs középen Szent Gellért csanádi püspök áll főpapi díszben, hímzett palástban, karingben, püspöksüveggel, cipőben, feje körül glória ragyog. Jobb karjával lándzsát és pálmaágat tart, emlékeztetve mártírhalálának körülményeire. Bal kezével díszített pásztorbotot tart. Szent Gellérttől balra a Gellért-hegy magasodik, lába előtt hullámos pólyaként a Duna látható. A püspök feje felett félkörívben a SZENT GELLÉRT név olvasható.
Csanád vármegye és Csanádvár vára Szent István király parancsa szerint Csanádról, I. István vezéréről kapta a nevét. A 11. század elején a Maros-vidék, a Körös folyótól Erdélyig és délkeleten a Szörénységig terjedő terület önálló fejedelmi hatalommal rendelkező ura marosvári Ajtony volt. Mivel Ajtony a magyar király fennhatóságát semmibe vette, I. István Koppány, majd az erdélyi Gyula legyőzése után Ajtony ellen anyai unokatestvérét, Csanádot küldte, aki legyőzte Ajtonyt, és fejét elküldte a királynak.
Ezért Szent István megjutalmazta Csanádot, amint Szent Gellért nagyobbik legendájában is olvashatjuk: „Attól a naptól kezdve Marosvárt Csanádvárnak nevezzék, és miután Csanád lesz a megye ispánja, saját nevéről az hívassék Csanád megyének”. I. István később, 1030-ban megalapította a Csanádi Püspökséget is, amelynek első püspöke Szent Gellért lett, ezért szerepel a pajzsban címerképként. Csanád vármegye címerét Mária Terézia adományozta 1761-ben, amelyet V. Ferdinánd megerősített és 1838-ban megújított.

This file depicts the official coat of arms or flag of a Hungarian municipality. According to 1.§ (4) of the Hungarian copyright law (1999./LXXVI.), copyright protection does not cover "legal provisions, other means of state direction, court and other official resolutions, announcements and documents issued by an authority or other official organ, as well as standards made obligatory by law and other similar regulations."
