Description The Long Dock Tunnel (orginally called the Bergen Tunnel) opened in 1861. It was the second crossing through the lower Hudson Palisades, the first being the PRR's Bergen Hill Cut at what is now Journal Square Transportation Center. The Long Dock originally was used by both the Erie and the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western. In 1876, the DL&W built the first tube of the Bergen Hill Tunnels farther north under Jersey City Heights. In 1910, the Erie opened the 4-track Erie Cut under Bergen Arches just to the south of the Long Dock. The Long Dock remained in use for freight. In conjunction with the Holland Tunnel and the Pulaski Skyway, the Route 1 Extension was built in yet another cut just north of and parallel to the Long Dock. The roadway, now known as State Highway 139, passes over the tunnel just before they both emerge at the western slope of the Palisades at Kennedy Boulevard in Jersey City. As of 2012 the Long Dock Tunnel was used by CSX Transportation's National Docks Secondary line.
