Palestinian workers wait at the Erez Crossing to enter the Gaza Strip, July 2005.
There is very little traffic during the middle of the day when this picture was taken. In the evening, Palestinian residents of the Gaza Strip who have been working in Israel must pass through here because they are not permitted to stay overnight in Israel, so it becomes very crowded. However, the passage is so slow that a few hours later, usually before midnight, they start to queue up on the other side to get back into Israel for tomorrow's work.
Israelis call these turnstiles "carosels".
