Het schip ligt voor kust, op de voorgrond een sloep, rechts in de verte een oorlogsschip van de Admiraliteit van de Maze. Links in de verte is de ingang van de haven van Hellevoetsluis te zien. In de linker benedenhoek is een stuk papier met inscriptie geschilderd waarin de historie van het schip beschreven wordt en het schilderij wordt opgedragen aan Cornelis de Witt, die samen met De Ruyter de Tocht naar Chatham ondernam.
