Summary

Description

This is what remains of the windmill that pumped water that was used to cut Caithness stone into flagstones. James Traill develpoed Caithness first commercial flagstone works using stone quarred from Castlehill.

Following the industrial revolution Traill relised the growing market for flagstone in both britain and overseas, by 1825 his quarry at Castlehill was regularly shipping out cargoes of flagstones .
