Description
English: John M. Vanderslice, in bowtie to the left of the boy (his son), was photographed at a reunion of his former Civil War regiment, the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry, at Gettysburg, Pennsyvania, c. 1885 (public domain photo courtesy of the U.S. Library of Congress). A native of Philadelphia, Vanderslice won the U.S. Medal of Honor for being the first man to reach the rifle pits of the Confederate States Army during the Battle of Hatcher's Run, Virginia on February 6, 1865.
