Description
English: Caption from source: "An aging Iowa Air National Guard KC-135 Stratotanker, displaying patriotic nose art, is about to retire. The KC-135, assigned to the 185th Air Reserve Wing in Sioux City, was flown to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., where the aircraft will be officially retired." (Published May 13, 2007.)

This aircraft is nicknamed "The Patriot", with elaborate nose art featuring Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, the Space Shuttle launching from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the Iwo Jima flag raising from World War II, and what appears to be the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington DC. This aircraft is a KC-135E, serial number 57-1447 (indicating that funds were allocated for its construction in Fiscal Year 1957), and performed the mission of aerial refueling of nuclear bombers, among other aircraft, during the Cold War and subsequent conflicts.
