Description
English: "Theatre Curtain of the Shintomi-za, with an Impromptu Sketch Monsters." ("Shintomiza Youkai Pull Curtain"). Made by Kawanabe Kyousai in 1880. Kanagaki Robun, a playwright at the end of the Edo period and the Meiji era, presented the curtain to Shintomiza, a theater that represented Tokyo in the early Meiji period. On June 30, 1880 (Meiji 13), Kyosai, a friend of Robun, completed the work in four hours while enjoying sake. The yōkai, modeled after popular actors such as Ichikawa Danjuro IX and Onoe Kikugoro V, who were representatives of the Kabuki world at the time, are drawn out of their kuzu baskets and rushing out into the audience at the Shintomiza Theater. ing. It is very interesting both as a work by Kyosai, a painter full of individuality, and as a rare example of a curtain that has been preserved.
