Summary

Description
English: View of the Tuchthuisstraat from the north with the Brouwershofje on the right. Two houses (one window each) of the hofje are visible in this photo. On the right of the window on the right, the number "6" in wrought iron can be seen. The 4 anchors to the right of the hofje entrance form the date 1586 of the wall that was built to enclose the hofje and protect the inhabitants from the Tuchthuis or House of Corrections across the street. After the Tuchthuis closed, the Tuchthuis gate was moved to the Frans Hals museum and the hofje inhabitants had the windows cut into the wall. The house next to the Brouwershofje is an example of a 17th century Haarlem step gable with arched windows. On the left, the house at the corner of the Botermarkt and Tuchthuisstraat has a white plaque on it which says "Rechts houden" (keep to the right), which has to do with the former Tuchthuis that used to be behind that house on the left.
