Summary

Description
English: The white painted brick-built building on the left comprise Paige's Almshouses in Church Lane, Barnstaple, Devon, founded by Elizabeth Horwood (d.1657) (Mrs Paige), 2nd wife and widow of Gilbert I Paige (d.1647), Mayor of Barnstaple, and sister of Thomas Horwood, Mayor of Barnstaple and founder of the adjoining Horwood's Almshouses and Girls' School. They consist of four almshouses of two rooms each, housing in total originally eight poor persons. Today owned and managed by "Barnstaple Municipal Charities", a registered charity, and still used as housing for "those in need" (per leaflet published by Barnstaple Municipal Charities available at Penrose's Almshouses). The building at the end of the Lane is the girls' school founded in 1659 by her brother Thomas Horwood (d.1658), twice Mayor of Barnstaple, and his "Horwood's Almshouses" are situated beyond Paige's Almshouses, set-back to the left, not visible in this image
