DescriptionPisa Baptistery, architraves over east portal, c1200.jpg
English: The upper part is slightly bend over and shows half-figures in byzantine style. Christ in the middle flanked by Maria and St. John the Baptist on his right side, and the evangelists alternating with angels. The lower architrave depicts scenes from the life of St. John the Baptist: his sermon, the baptism of Christ, the incarceration on behalf of Herod, Salome dancing, his beheading and his burial. The architraves are probably by the same artists who also did the foiled columns and the reliefs on the jambs framing the portal. Only the north portal has also figurative decoration on its architrave.
