Summary

Description
English: The CIE gray-scale calculation for self-luminous devices can be plotted with gray-scale as ordinate and target-luminance as abscissa. There is a different curve for each background luminance. This plot represents the gray scale of an optotype E subtending 10 arc minutes, about 1/3 of the moon's diameter seen from Earth.

Other information

Similar plots have been published for other gray scales (Eric Heinemann, 1972 plotted his 1961 data this way), and for the CIE gray scale for a 2-degree disk rather than a 10-minute E.
