'6400' auto-fitted No. 6424 (built 9/35) worked on one of the several branch services from Pontypool Road Locomotive Depot. In 1951, Ponypool Road was an important junction with marshalling yard, the junction of the Newport - Hereford - Shrewsbury main line with the Vale of Neath line westward across the various valleys to Aberdare and Neath, also of the Eastern Valleys lines and the branch to Ross-on-Wye. Therefore the locomotive allocation was substantial and varied. Coded 86G by BR/WR (Newport Division), the Depot allocation of 90 in 1950 comprised:- 5 4-6-0, 24 2-8-0 (22 GW, 2 ex-WD), 4 2-6-0, 1 0-6-0, 11 2-6-2T, 4 2-8-2T, 1 2-8-0T, 5 0-6-2T, 33 0-6-0T and 2 0-4-2T, also 1 Diesel railcar.
