The Porter House was built in 1850. It is the only one-room deep, ante-bellum, Greek Revival cottage in the area. the oldest part of the house is the rear ell, which probably originated as a pioneer's one-room cabin built in the late 1820s or early 1830s by Samuel Hancock. Over the next decade or so, another room and central hall were added, creating the classic "dogtrot" arrangement . From the time of the Civil War to the twentieth century the house has been owned by the Porter family.
