English: Mitochondrial outer membrane proteins are identified via proximity labeling. APEX2 is an engineered enzyme that oxidizes biotin-phenol to biotin-phenol free radical using hydrogen peroxide. In this proximity labeling experiment to identify mitochondrial outer membrane proteins, APEX2 is fused to a known mitochondrial outer membrane protein in live cells. Biotin-phenol and hydrogen peroxide are then added sequentially. APEX2 oxidation causes biotin-phenol to react with nearby proteins.
