Description
Español: La obra representa a las vírgenes y mártires Santa Justa y Santa Rufina, y pertenece a la serie realizada por Murillo para la iglesia del convento de Capuchinos de Sevilla, donde se situaba en el retablo mayor. Las santas, que son prototipos de belleza popular sevillana, es una de las pinturas más famosas del pintor, y las hermanas aparecen representadas con las palmas del martirio y con unas vasijas de barro alusivas a su condición de vendedoras de cerámica. En sus manos sostienen la torre de la catedral de Sevilla, La Giralda, pues según la tradición evitaron su desplome en el terremoto de 1504. Las espléndidas representaciones de santos del conjunto de Capuchinos, los complejos juegos de luces de algunas escenas, son claros frutos de su madurez artística. Madurez técnica que se trasluce en las pinceladas de prodigiosa soltura, vaporosas, con las que deshace las formas, anunciando la sensibilidad del siglo venidero.
