Summary

Description
English: On December 27, 2022, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of South Korea decorated with a blanket of snow. According to local media, a snowstorm on Christmas weekend (December 23-25) brought heavy snow and frigid temperatures to much of southern South Korea. Temperatures plunged on Christmas day, when a low of -9˚C (15.8˚F) and a high of 0˚C (32˚F) was reported. The heavy snow caused roads closures, froze water pipes, and damaged buildings—especially greenhouses—in the southern farming regions. Some area in the southwestern province of North Jeolla accumulated more than 60 centimeters (23.6 inches), while 92.3 centimeters (36 inches) fell on Jeju Island on December 24. Jeju Island is located south of the Korean Peninsula and is not visible in this image.
