Description

Artwork by Steven Siegel, Biography, detail (mixed media, 2008–13). The image illustrates a later stage and body of work in Steven Siegel's career in the 2000s and 2010s, when he created the large-scale, five-year studio work, Biography (2008–13). Functioning as both a geologic and personal timeline, the 156-foot-long wall piece was constructed organically from right to left without a fixed endpoint, using Siegel's characteristic strategies of accumulation, compression and transformation. Here it is seen in partial 75-foot installation. It combines intricately woven detail, diverse postconsumer materials, and an epic, undulating horizontal sweep; writers have compared it to the Abstract expressionist paintings of Jackson Pollock, the Pop assemblages of Nancy Rubins, and visually, to shifting landscape tectonics, a vast topographical map, or DNA. This project has been publicly exhibited in prominent venues, discussed in major art journals and daily press publications, and commissioned by public institutions.

Purpose of use

The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a later stage and body of work in Steven Siegel's career from the late 2000s and 2010s: his large-scale, five-year studio work, Biography (2008–13), which draws on elements of his earlier intimate sculptures and large public installations. The work functions as both a geologic and personal timeline, and combines intricately woven detail, diverse postconsumer materials, and an epic, undulating horizontal sweep. At 156 feet long, the mixed-media wall piece has only been viewed in large sections (of up to 100 feet) exhibited at Marlborough (2011, 2013) and the Albany Airport (2018– ) or digitally, via composite photographs. Because the article is about an artist and his work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to visualize this key phase of his career, which brought widespread recognition through exhibitions in major venues, coverage by major critics in publications, and public commissions. Siegel's work of this type and this work in particular is discussed in the article and by prominent critics cited in the article.

Replaceable?

There is no free equivalent of this or any other of this series by Steven Siegel, so the image cannot be replaced by a free image.

Other information

The image will not affect the value of the original work or limit the copyright holder's rights or ability to distribute the original due to its low resolution and the general workings of the art market, which values the actual work of art. Because of the low resolution, illegal copies could not be made.
