Summary

Description
English: A luohan (arhat), the Buddhist saint or wise man, who has attained nirvana (the end of rebirth and suffering in this world). This luohan belongs to a set of 8 luohans from a group of caves to the west of Yixian, south of Beijing. The Yixian figures are striking for their somber dignity and power and continue tradition begun in the Tung Dynasty, of representing luohans with distinctive human forces. From Yixian, Hebei province, the People's Republic of China. Liao Dynasty, 907-1125 CE. On display at the British Museum in London.
