Östergötlands största stad på 1600-talet var Norrköping. Erik Dahlberg har i sitt praktverk Suecia Antiqua et hodierna visat staden, såsom den såg ut före ryssarnas angrepp 1719, med slottet Johannisborg och fem segelfartyg seglande till och från Bråviken i förgrunden. Samma vatten som fyllde slottets vallgravar. Tre kyrkor syns i bakgrunden, alla inom stadens tullar och vid sidan av dessa rådhuset, Holmentornet och Wåhltornet. Det sistnämnda ett utsiktstorn för stadens säkerhet nattetid och till stadens försvar som hade försvunnit långt innan kopparsticket gjordes.

Det är oklart vad byggnaden med takryttare längst till höger föreställer, gissningsvis Himmelstalunds läderbruk eller Borgs gamla kyrka. Rådhuset, "curia", i den form det visas här blev aldrig uppfört.

Jan vad den Aveelens kopparstick utfördes 1706 men förbereddes redan ett årtionde tidigare.
