DescriptionThe west doorway to Strata Florida Abbey, Ceredigion - geograph.org.uk - 2005702.jpg
English: The west doorway to Strata Florida Abbey, Ceredigion, near to Pontrhydfendigaid, Ceredigion/Sir Ceredigion, Great Britain.
This was the main entrance to this late 12th/early 13th century Cistercian Abbey.
Strata Florida is a corruption of Ystrad Fflur which is the valley about two miles to the south-west where the monks originally settled in about 1164 AD before beginning construction here in about 1184 AD. It is not known why the monks needed to move here. The modern roofing seen through the arch protects some fine mediaeval tiling.
