Summary

Description

Verdite (fuchsite metamorphite) (6.5 cm across at its base) from the Precambrian of South Africa.

Verdite is a ~monomineralic, microcrystalline fuchsite metamorphic rock to an impure, microcrystalline fuchsite metamorphic rock. The dominant mineral, fuchsite, is a greenish, chromium-rich muscovite mica.

This rock was not accompanied by specific information, but it does come from the Archean of South Africa. It most likely comes from one of the two following South African verdite localities:

1) verdite lens in layered mafic-ultramafic dikes in shear zones in the Jamestown Schist Belt-Nelspruit Batholith transition area (the Nelspruit Batholith is Mesoarchean in age, 3.015 Ga); north or northwest of the town of Barberton, South Africa.

2) verdite lens or pod in ultramafic host rocks in the Onverwacht Group, Barberton Greenstone Belt, Paleoarchean, 3.30-3.55 Ga; southwest of the town of Barberton, South Africa.
