Description
English: Pearl Harbor, Hawaii (Dec. 7, 2004) - U.S. Marines, assigned to Marine Aircraft Group Two Four (MAG-24), stand at parade rest prior to a twenty-one gun salute on the USS Vestal mooring quay. Vestal, a repair ship, was moored outboard of the battleship USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor. She was hit by two bombs and further damaged when Arizona’s forward magazines exploded. Repaired over the next few months, she was transferred to the South Pacific in August 1942, where she mended many combat-damaged ships during difficult times of the Guadalcanal and Central Solomons campaigns.
