English: Launch of the Mars mission Viking I payload on Titan III Centaur rocket, August 20, 1975. The cruise phase of the Viking spacecraft lasted 310 days until Mars orbit insertion. The Viking I orbiter high-gain antenna was put into operation November 12, 1975. The high-gain antenna was repositioned daily to keep the radio beams aimed directly at the Earth. |
