Summary

Description
English: The Animal Wall is a Grade I listed structure. It was designed for the Marquis of Bute and constructed directly in front of Cardiff Castle during the 1890s. It was originally decorated with nine animals.

By the end of World War I, traffic along Duke and Castle Street had become very congested and it was decided that it should be widened and aligned with the re-built Cardiff Bridge. To accommodate the widening of the road, the entire wall was lengthened and re-located in its present position, approx 50 metres to the west. Six new animals were carved to fill in the extra length of the new wall. These can be easily distinguished from the originals as they don’t have glass eyes.

This vulture is one of the additions made in the 1930s.
