Summary
| Description | The preserved 140 ton M.N. Yavari, built by Thames Iron Works, London in 1861-62 under contract from the James Watt Foundary, Birmingham as a gunboat for the Peruvian Navy with 2X24 pdrs for use on Lake Titicaca. Dismantled and shipped to Arica (then part of Peru), the 2,766 pieces were then sent by train to Tacna and then on mules to Puno on Lake Titicaca and re-erected, finally being completed on Christmas Day, 1870. Lengthened in 1874. Fought in the War of the Pacific 1879-83 between Peru, Bolivia and Chile. Then converted to civilian use by the British Peruvian Corporation; in 1914 it's Watt steam engine (powered by dried lama dung!) was replaced by a Swedish Bollinder semi-diesel (recently renovated by Volvo).In 1987 it was bought by the Yavari Association for restoration.
